Big Walnut’s boys and girls bowling teams enjoyed a competitive 2014 campaign in the Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division under first-year head coach Katrina Hartings.
Three members of the Golden Eagle boys squad earned All-OCC recognition. Senior Luke Hartings, who averaged 195.8, was a First Team selection. Senior Joey Steller, who averaged 161.3, and junior Conner Leidtke, who averaged 161.0, were named to the Third Team.
On the girls squad, senior Alexis Beiwinkler, who posted a 144.8 average earned Third Team recognition. Beiwinkler and junior Hannah Gollihugh were both District qualifiers for the Golden Eagles.
Postseason boys team awards were presented to Luke Hartings (Golden Eagle Award and High Series Award — 464) and Steller (Most Improved Bowler and Rookie Of The Year Award).
For the girls, postseason awards went to Beiwinkler (Golden Eagle Award) and Gollighugh (Rookie of the Year Award) as well as to sophomore Mara Hartings (High Series Award — 364) and junior Francesca Gianessi (Most Improved Bowler Award) were recognized.
Coach Hartings awarded 17 varsity letters, 10 to members of the boys squad and seven to members of the girls squad.
Leidtke and Luke Hartings each earned their third varsity letter, Hartings was also the recipient of his Senior Plaque. Seniors Donald Good and Garret Jackson were presented with their second varsity letter while first-year vasity letters went to seniors Grant Burks, Adam Freeberg and Steller. Burks joined Hartings in receiving his Senior Plaque.
Junior varsity letters were awarded to freshmen Terrell Bohanan and Chip Hanawalt as well as to sophomore Evan Thiergartner.
All seven members of the girls squad earned varsity letters, including Beiwinkler who received her third varsity letter as well as her Senior Plaque. Second-year varsity letters winners were sophomore Holly Pinnix along with classmates Francesca and Mara Hartings. First-year varsity letter winners were juniors Amy Vlaar, Michaella Young and Gollihugh.
Academically, ten of the Golden Eagles’ 17 bowlers earned recognition as Big Walnut Scholar Athletes (Varsity Letter/3.20 Grade Point Average). They were Leidtke, Burks, Freeburg, Luke Hartings and Steller on the boys side and Mara Hartings, Gianessi, Vlaar, Young and Beiwinkler on the girls side.
Steller and Beiwinkler were also recognized as OCC Scholar Athletes (Senior/3.50 GPA).
