When it came to postseason performances, Big Walnut’s 2014 wrestling season put the Golden Eagles on the map in the Central District.
The season wrapped up with senior Alex Eisnnicher reaching the Schottenstein Center podium at the OHSAA Division II State Meet with six grapplers earning All-Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division honors under the tutelage of seven-year head coach Luke Moore.
Eisnnicher, who would place first at the Sectionals en route placing sixth at the State in the 170-pound weight class after earning All-Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division First Team and All-Metro recognition. He was one of six Golden Eagles to earn All-OCC recognition. Senior RJ Martin, who would go on to qualify to the State, joined Eisnnicher as a First Team honoree at 138 pounds. OCC honors also went to sophomore Jacob Hadden (Third Team, 126 Pounds), senior Austin Carr (Third Team, 160 Pounds), senior Austin Crow (Third Team, 220 Pounds) and sophomore Wes Landrum (Fourth Team, 120 Pounds).
Martin, Carr and Landrum would go on to place second at the Sectionals while freshman Nate Helsley and sophomore Nico Grier would place fourth.
Big Walnut would place sixth in the OCC Capital Division with a 2-5 record behind division champion Delaware Hayes (7-0), Olentangy Orange (6-1) and Mount Vernon (5-2).
At the postseason awards banquet held Saturday, March 8, in the Big Walnut High School Cafeteria, Moore presented five postseason honors to members of his Golden Eagle squad. Carr was the recipient of the coveted Golden Eagle Award, Martin was awarded the Steven P. Morgenstern Memorial Award, Hadden the Hardest Worker Award, Landrum the Most Improved Wrestler Award and Matt Halbakken the Freshman of the Year Award.
Moore, assisted by staff members Luke Worley, Tony Eisnnicher, Aaron Renner, Tim Halbakken, Aaron Morris and Kenneth Moore, awarded 21 varsity letters.
Moore’s four seniors, Carr, Eisnnicher, Martin and Crow were recognized, Carr, Eisnnicher and Martin were awarded their Senior Blankets as four-year letter winners. Crow was presented with his second varsity letter. All four were the recipients of their Senior Plaques.
Joining Crow as two-year letter winners were junior Michael Nash along with sophomores Andrew Cochran, Tyler Hogg, Anthony Pisano, Hadden and Landrum. First-year varsity letter winners included junior John Schnurr; sophomores Evan Watkins, Daniel Zitello and Grier; and freshman Carson Dearth, Aaron Hartley, Beauregard Kuhlman, Matthews Russell, Luke Starkey, Halbakken and Helsley.
Junior varsity letters were presented to freshman Garrett Gollihugh, Kyle McKibben-Warren, Joshua Parker and Alex Ramsey.
Seven team statisticians were also recognized, including senior Annika Lieurance, sophomores Lauren Bender, Abagail Eisnnicher, Corie Harness and Cheyenne Young, and freshmen Andrea Bryan and Caitlynn Curtin.
Academic recognition went to Dearth, Halbakken, Hartley, Cochran, Hadden, Hogg, Pisano, Zitello, Nash, Schnurr, Carr and Martin who were honored as Big Walnut Scholar Athletes (Varsity Letterwinner/3.20 Grade Point Average).
