The mission of a new Central Ohio-based company called Connect & Grow is to help small businesses generate new sales from a source they often overlook: their existing customer base. “We’re here to provide entrepreneurs an inexpensive way to stay engaged with clients, win repeat business, and get referrals from existing customers,” said Shawn Kendrick, co-owner of the new venture.
What’s Kendrick’s secret? It’s a new twist on electronic newsletters.
“I realized most small business owners want a newsletter, but they don’t have time to be their own marketing department,” explained Kendrick, who holds an MBA and has been a successful freelance writer for almost a decade. “That’s where Connect & Grow comes in. We do all the work. It’s completely turnkey. We design it, write the articles and send the finished newsletter out for our customers. Each of our clients’ customer base is receiving a great monthly newsletter with timely, valuable information tailored to their industry.” Kendrick added that Connect & Grow newsletters help keep businesses at the top of their clients’ minds. “It’s a secret that all the most successful retailers in the global market have been employing for years,” he shared.
Realtor Mark Dandrea is Kendrick’s Connect & Grow business partner. Kendrick approached Dandrea about the idea for advice, and Dandrea immediately saw the seeds of a solid and unique business venture. “I’ve been producing a newsletter for years and sending it out to my large network of contacts,” Dandrea commented. “In my line of work, people move on average every seven years. It’s much easier for me to get repeat business or referrals from past clients than to find new ones.”
A significant amount of research supports Dandrea’s line of thinking. Forbes cites statistics showing that it takes half the effort to sell to current clients as opposed to new customers. Another study found that 80 percent of a company’s future business will be generated from just 20 percent of current clients. Add to this the fact that gaining new customers is five times more costly than growing repeat business, and keeping that relationship becomes even more crucial — and lucrative.
