Big Walnut picked up a pair of solid non-conference wins over visiting Cardington on Saturday, posting to a 7-0 win in the opener before rallying from five runs down in the fifth inning to complete the sweep with a 17-9 decision over the Pirates in the nightcap.
The Golden Eagles (7-5) coupled a potent offensive attack with near-perfect pitching in the first game. They scored a run in the first via a Shaye Kuhlman solo home run, added two in the third, and four in the fourth thanks to a Hayley Apple grand slam.
Shelbie Borchers finished with a 2-for-3 with two runs scored performance at the plate. Leah Shaw was also 2-for-3 while Kuhlman and and Apple combined for five RBIs with their two circuit clout.
Kate Petty, meanwhile, turned in another solid pitching performance, allowing just three hits in her seven-inning complete game outing in the circle.
Big Walnut found itself on the wrong end of a 9-4 score in the fifth inning of the second game on the twinbill, but erupted for 13 unanswered runs in the game’s late stages, including an eight-run sixth inning punctuated by a Brooke Hatfield grand slam, to seal the deal.
Katelynn Cheadle sparked the team’s 17-hit attack with a 3-for-5 effort to go with two RBIs and a run scored. Other standouts included Borchers, who was 2-for-5 with three runs; Hatfield, who finished 2-for-4 with her homer and four RBIs; and Jessica Coletta, who had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored.
