Last Friday morning the Delaware Area Career Center and Columbus State Community College hosted a Sunbury/Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting on Friday, April 11, at Bent Tree Golf Club honoring four Big Walnut High School juniors, one Columbus State student, and one DACC student who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the combined areas of scholarship, leadership and service.

Present for the occasion were Big Walnut Local School District Superintendent Steve Mazzi, Big Walnut High School Principal Jeff Jones, DACC North Campus Director Steve Fujii and Big Walnut High School guidance counselors Jeanne Collett and Tammi Jordan.

Mazzi said the annual chamber student recognition breakfast is one of the high spots of the school year.

“This event kicks off an exciting time of year,” Mazzi said. “These recognitions are followed by Senior Honors Night, Prom and the Graduation; and this morning we recognize the best of the best, thanks to a supportive community.”

Recognized were Big Walnut High School juniors Nick Gugliemi, Nick Gerwig, Caeileen Lozano and Kennedy Walls.

Also recognized were Aria Dockham, a former Big Walnut student who graduated with the class of 2013 and is currently a freshman at Columbus State, and Delaware Area Career Center student Melinda Bailey.

Each year during the chamber’s student recognition breakfast, the school district recognizes one district employee for service to Big Walnut’s mission of inspiring and guiding students to achieve their maximum potential.

This year, the district recognized maintenance employee Gene Hall.

“Many times we think only of teachers as inspiring and guiding our students to achieve the maximum potential, but it’s not always teachers,” Mazzi said. “All of the people who work in our schools collectively make Big Walnut an A-plus school district.”
