Memorial Day was Monday, May 26, complete with solemn remembrance ceremonies, flea market and garage sales; but most folks do not know that the original date for Memorial Day, a.k.a. Decoration Day, was May 30.

Through the years that date changed several times and in different parts of the country. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act changing the dates of four holidays from their traditional dates to a Monday in order to create convenient three-day holiday weekends. The change moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May.

On Friday, May 30, members of the newly formed Delaware County Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1095 observed the original Memorial Day with a wreath laying ceremony at the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial in Sunbury.

During the ceremony a wreath was placed at each of the five military flag poles in memory of all veterans who fought in the Vietnam War.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
