If you’re wondering why every tree and utility pole in the Village of Sunbury is covered with purple and silver streamers, it’s to announce that the American Cancer Society, the nation’s leading voluntary health organization, will hold its annual Relay For Life event Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning at the Big Walnut High School Stadium.
Relay For Life is a 24-hour event that brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for fun, food, music, entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take turns walking or running on a track.
The Relay For Life of Big Walnut opening ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, including the emotional Survivors Lap; the Closing Ceremony will be held Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m.
One of the highlights of the Big Walnut Relay For Life is the Luminaria Ceremony, which will be held at 9:30 p.m. Saturday evening.
During the luminaria event people may purchase a luminaria in memory of, or in honor of, someone who has been touched by cancer. The luminaria bags are placed around the track and lit during a memorial program.
This year’s Relay For Life of Big Walnut is composed of 18 teams and 91 participants who have already raised over $17,000.
All money raised during Relay For Life events go to the American Cancer Society, the leading nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
Area residents may continue to contribute to the 2014 Relay For Life of Big Walnut total via their favorite Relay teams until the Relay season ends in August.

One Final Note: Organizers said you do not have to be a member of a Relay For Life Team to attend the Relay, just show up, enjoy the entertainment, and while you’re there consider lending your support by walking a lap or two (or three or four) around the high school track.
