East Side drivers headed downtown via Interstate 70 will notice a new traffic pattern just before the I-70/71 split. Overnight Wednesday, crews shifted westbound I-70 traffic to begin construction on the next phase of the Columbus Crossroads project.
I-70 west is reduced to one lane between 18th Street and Grant Avenue for nine months to construct a retaining wall along the interstate. That means I-70 west thru traffic and traffic headed to I-71 south have to merge into the left lane sooner than they did prior to construction.
Drivers are encouraged to follow the signs and choose their lane early.
I-70 westbound lanes
Tomorrow night, crews will shift traffic on I-71 south starting at Main Street to 3rd Street. Drivers will have the same number of lanes, but the lanes will be shifted to the left.
Here’s how traffic will be impacted Friday.
FRIDAY, JULY 21, 2017
8 PM: the ramp from Broad Street to I-71 south will close. Detour: Broad St. westbound to 3rd to I-71 south. Eastbound Broad St: Parsons Ave. to Main St. to Rich St. to 3rd St. to I-71 south.
8 PM: I-70 west reduced to three lanes at Champion Ave. and Kelton Ave.
11 PM: I-71 south reduced to two lanes at Main Street.
5 AM: All ramps and lanes open.
This $41 million project is the first of five projects to improve the I-70/71 corridor. The first project will build a new wider bridge at Grant Avenue as well as make improvements to Mound and Fulton.
