Local family selected as 2017 Night Moves ambassador

Family Shares Story to Help More Babies Be Born Healthy

COLUMBUS — Micah James was born 6 weeks premature with a rare genetic disorder and spent all 96 days of his life in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). His parents, Julie & Michael, have been selected as the Night Moves Ambassador Family to honor Micah and bring greater awareness to premature birth, birth defects & infant mortality.

In 2015, Julie and Michael were excited about becoming parents and looking forward to starting their family. But at 20 weeks their world crumbled. “We found out our son had a brain malformation and other potential medical issues, but chose to continue the pregnancy, with careful monitoring because we knew there was a chance that he would not make it full term” said Julie.

Micah James, was born on April 14, 2016 at 34 weeks, 6 weeks premature, weighing 6 pounds 4 ounces. Thanks to research funded by the March of Dimes focused on premature births, Micah survived, and lived for 96 short days. He unfortunately was affected with a rare genetic disorder called Severe Joubert Syndrome, and passed away on July 19, 2016. He was this family’s beautiful, strong, brave little boy. Despite their grief and the loss of their only child, they chose to share Micah’s story and honor their son in hopes that other families won’t have to experience prematurity and the complications it can cause and some day, every baby is born healthy.

“1 in 10 babies in Franklin County and across the U.S. are born prematurely. It’s our goal to help spread awareness and raise money for continued research and support of premature births, birth defects, and infant mortality,” added Julie. “We are excited to be chosen as the 2017 Night Moves Ambassador Family. It is a privilege to share our story, and to bring more awareness to the work that the March of Dimes does every day.”
