West Side Ramp Closed after Work Zone Crash (UPDATE)

Car behind barrier

Two people were taken to the hospital— with non-life threatening injuries — after a car crashed into the work zone on the west side at I-270 and 70.

A construction worker along with the driver of the car were both transported.

The ramp from I-70 west to I-270 south is where the crash occurred. That ramp is currently closed.

Some how the driver of the car got in between the guardrail and the temporary concrete barrier that protects the construction workers from live traffic.

One of the workers saw the car and literally jumped out of the way. That worker is employed by the contractor and not ODOT.

Again, no serious injuries have been reported.

The ramp opened in approximately one to two hours.

Cat Food Clean-up Continues After Rush Hour

West Side: All lanes of Interstate 270 south between Roberts Rd. and Cemetery Road are now open, but that tractor trailer full of cat food that crashed and burned was behind the portable concrete barrier.

Six hours was not enough time today to clean up the charred remains from the semi and all that cat food. Crews will be back after 6 p.m. tonight to finish.

That means the far right lane of I-270 south between Roberts and Cemetery Roads will be closed again along with the ramp from Cemetery Road east to I-270 south. Detour: Cemetery Rd. to I-270 north to Tuttle Crossing Blvd. to I-270 south.

Crews will work all night if need be until all debris is cleared.

I-270 Restricted on West Side to Remove Crash Debris

ODOT closed the far right lane on I-270 south between Cemetery Road and Roberts Road to remove the overturned tractor trailer that crashed overnight.

The ramp from EB Cemetery Road to I-270 south will also be closed. Detour: I-270 north to Tuttle Crossing Blvd. to I-270 south.

Closure duration unknown since the smoldering cat food has to be off loaded before the overturned semi can be towed away.

If the mess is not cleaned up by the afternoon rush hour, ODOT will open all lanes, and tell the owner of the tractor trailer to come back later when traffic volumes are lighter to clean up.

Bridge Damage Minor; US 33 Now Open

Bridge Bucket Inspection

An ODOT bridge engineer and several inspectors have determined the damage to the bridge in Union County struck by a dump truck this morning is minor. That’s why all lanes of US 33 west between the Scottslawn exit and US Route 42 are now open.

At a later time, a section of one of the steel beams will need to be straightened or replaced.

ODOT determined the dump truck bed that hit the bridge did not cause the bridge over Beecher Gamble Road to lose any load bearing capacity.

That’s why ODOT says the bridge is safe for vehicles to drive over and under it.

When the dump truck hit the bridge shortly after 9 this morning, all lanes of US 33 west were closed as well as the ramps from Post Rd./161 to and from US 33 west.

All lanes of US 33 west and ramps are now open.

TWO MORE RAMPS OPEN

Just in time for the weekend, ODOT will open two more ramps at the I-270/SR 315/US 23 interchanges, one of them brand new:

• SR 315 south to I-270 east – New “Shepherd’s Hook” Ramp

• I-270 east to SR 315 north – Loop ramp reopens

The graphic below illustrates how the new ramps will operate. Please note the project is not complete. There are more ramps and bridges to open this year. Final completion is still October/November.

NEW RAMP TO US 23 OPENS

New ramp bridge from I-270 east to US 23 will open. I-270 eastbound drivers will have to exit sooner than they’re used to. The graphic below shows where drivers need to make their decision.

23 Decision Point

This new exit to US 23 travels over traffic coming from SR 315 north and south – that means no more weaving and merging.
