Cancer dates to remember

We all understand that cancer is so widespread that it strikes every family. Whether it’s a member of our own family, or a family member of friends or acquaintances, we all know someone fighting the disease.

The problem is, we ask ourselves, what can we do?

One thing we can all do is support fundraising efforts for families currently faced with cancer; and we can also participate in local American Cancer Society fundraising efforts like Relay For Life of Big Walnut or Glow4Hope.

This coming Sunday (July 12) Sydney’s Soldiers will hold a fundraiser from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Autumn Lakes Campground for Sydney Hatfield, daughter of Sunbury Mayor Tommy Hatfield. Sydney was recently diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a rare, inoperable brain cancer.

The day includes live music by Southwynd, Bingo, a silent auction, a live auction and a raffle. There will also be paddleboat rentals, corn hole, a dunk tank, bounce houses, children’s midway games and a public figure pie-in-the- ace game.

The family-oriented event is open to the public. There will be a Hog Roast. Dinner tickets are $10 and include dinner, drink and dessert. Activity tickets are $20 for 25 tickets; each activity will take one or two tickets. For additional information, to donate auction items, or to make a donation to Sydney’s Soldiers Fundraiser call Lesli Kintner at 614-206-5020.

Autumn Lakes Campground is located at 8644 Porter Central Road north of Sunbury

Glow4Hope, a 5k Night Run/Walk to benefit Relay For Life of Big Walnut, will be held on Saturday, July 18.

The race kicks off from Sunbury Mills (Kroger) Plaza. Registration starts at 8:30 p.m. Race at 9:30 p.m. with an after party at the Big Walnut Grille featuring VINNTAGE.

Further from home, but with local roots, is the July 22-25 Musicians Against Childhood Cancer Music Festival at Hoover Y-Park, 1570 Rohr Road, Lockbourne.

The MACC Music Festival features Bluegrass musicians and benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Tickets can be purchased online by the day or for the entire festival; camping and hotels are located nearby.
