Brenner would run for the open seat currently held by Kris Jordan (R-Ostrander). Delaware County Prosecutor Carol O’Brien has announced that she would be running for Tiberi’s seat in Congress. Also considering runs for the 12th district (ranging from northern Franklin to Richland and Muskingum counties) are Jordan, Rep. Rick Carfagna (R-Genoa Twp.), Sen. Kevin Bacon (R-Minerva Park) and others. There would be a special election, and the winner would likely beat the Democratic candidate next year.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE REGARDING 2018 INTENTIONS

POWELL, OHIO — Over a few short hours this morning, I have received dozens of calls asking and encouraging me to run for Congress. This comes after the news that our highly popular and well-respected Congressman Pat Tiberi will be stepping down.

It is extremely flattering to have received these calls. However, I made it known to the Delaware County Republican Central Committee on Tuesday evening that I plan to run for State Senate to serve Ohio’s 19th Senate district.

Being in public office is about being a servant to those in the district. The House district I represent is 2/3 of Delaware county, and I previously represented all of Delaware county when I served as Delaware County Recorder. I have already built support in the other areas of the State Senate district, including Knox and Franklin counties.

There are so many policy initiatives at the state level that I have been working on over the past seven years as a state representative, and I want to be able to continue fighting for them in the State Senate. Being Chairman of the Ohio House Education and Career Readiness Committee takes me all over the state of Ohio, and I have learned the intricacies of this difficult subject. I serve on four other committees where I also devote a number of hours to issues that are important to the residents of my district. As much as a congressional run is tempting, I think my skills and knowledge of the issues can best be used, at this time, to help the state of Ohio in the State Senate.

I have known Congressman Tiberi now for many years, and I’ve always appreciated his advice, assistance and support. I know that he is making a decision that is best for him and his family, and I encourage everyone to keep him in your prayers.

Thank you again to everyone who has encouraged me to run for Congress. Now is just not the time. I look forward to serving the people of the 67th Ohio House district through the end of 2018 and having the honor of earning the support of the people in the 19th State Senate district.
