American Legion Post 457 Adjutant Gene Fuller recently said the Sunbury Legion post may rank as one of the smaller posts in Ohio, but it’s one of the most active American Legion Posts in the country.
“Our post membership consists of several WW II and Korean War veterans, a number of Vietnam War-era veterans, as well as Gulf War and War on Terror veterans,” Fuller said. “But for several years, the roof on the Post 457 building has been patched and repaired while members of our small Post have been trying to accumulate funds for its replacement.”
Fuller said a solution to the post’s deteriorating roof materialized, thanks to longtime Post 457 member Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Bowman (Retired), a Business Development Manager for Valspar Coatings.
“Lt. Col. Bowman was recently meeting with a valued Valspar customer, Darren Galbraith, President of North Star Metals Manufacturing Company,” Fuller said. “North Star Metals manufactures metal roofing using Valspar High Performance Coatings. Darren had visited the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial in Sunbury, and Jerry told Darren that Post 457 members, over three years, had given several thousand hours of labor and materials in the building of the memorial.”
Fuller said Galbraith was so impressed with the dedication of the local veterans that he wanted to do something special for their efforts. He decided to donate a complete new metal roof using Valspar’s new Solar Reflective technology Weather XL for the Post 457 building.
“With a generous donation from Lt. Col. Bowman, Post 457 then had the funds to cover the installation cost,” Fuller said. “The top-of-the-line North Star Metals Five Star roof is now installed and looks fantastic.”
Fuller said on seeing the new roof for the first time, Post 457 Commander Scott Bloch and other members of the Post commented that they would be eternally grateful to Darren Galbraith and North Star Metals for their generosity and commitment to Sunbury-area veterans.
