Thanks to a sponsorship by members of the Sunbury Galena Rotary Club, Big Walnut High School hosted a Leadership Summit on July 28, attended by approximately 60 students from all four of the high school’s incoming classes.

In addition to welcoming remarks by District Superintendent Angie Pollock and High School Principal Andy Jados, students gathered for small group discussions and listened to additional remarks by Big Walnut alumni Alfred Yates and Tommy Hatfield.

Hatfield, who serves as Sunbury’s mayor, told the students that everyone makes decisions every day.

“Our lives are the accumulation of all the small decisions we make; we are all the result of how we make decisions, especially in difficult times,” Hatfield said. “In my position as mayor, I have to make decisions that are good for the community. In doing that, I rely on my core values.”

Hatfield said when he is faced with a difficult decision that would impact other people’s lives, he asks himself what his mother would think about the decision he’s making.

“At the end of the day, right is right and wrong is wrong,” Hatfield said. “The decisions you make today will determine where you’re going to be 20 years now. Do what you know is right. Bad decisions are not like wine — they don’t get better with age.”

Jados said the Leadership Summit would not be a one-day affair; that students attending the summit would participate in an online Growth Mindset book study.

“We’ll continue the online book study throughout the school year, creating continued opportunities for these students to develop leadership qualities,” Jados said.
