Aug. 2 was National Night Out. National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer and better places to live.

Genoa Township held its National Night Out at McNamara Park, where members of the community gathered for food, fellowship, and demonstrations by Genoa Township’s first responders.

Police Chief Steve Gammill said his department has always received exceptional support from members of the community.

“Our relationship with the community has gotten even better since the shooting of police officers in Dallas,” Gammill said. “And it’s nice on a hot and humid evening like this to see so many community members come out to show their support for our township’s police officers and firefighters.”

One popular visitor to the township’s National Night Out gathering was Ben, the Genoa police canine officer. Ben, a Belgian Malinois, and his handler, Officer Mike Sigman, demonstrated how a police dog responds to emergencies.

Members of the township fire department held a trailer burn, demonstrating how a sprinkler system keeps a house fire from escalating into a roaring blaze; and a MedFlight Eurocopter EC-130-B4 landed at the park and was a popular stop for children and adults alike.

Gammill said the evening was a success, but would not have been possible without the help of many volunteers.
