At Halftime during Friday evening’s Big Walnut High School varsity football game versus visiting Newark High School, 2012 Big Walnut High School graduate Brea Medlock and Mark Matthews, a 1972 Big Walnut graduate and retired Big Walnut teacher and coach, were inducted into the Big Walnut High School Athletic Wall of Fame.
Medlock was a standout member of both the Big Walnut High School and Wittenberg University track and field teams.
During Medlock’s tenure at Big Walnut she set five school records – 4×200 relay, sprint medley, indoor 400-meter dash, indoor 4×200 relay, and indoor 4×400 relay. She also qualified for the indoor state meet seven times.
Medlock was also part of a team that won two indoor district titles, had 297 wins, and 15 team titles. She ranks ninth in most points scored in District meets with 97 and she is the seventh all-time leading scorer in Big Walnut girls track history.
While at Wittenberg, Medlock was named a two-time indoor NCAC sprinter of the year and is ranked second in school history with 21 NCAC placings. She was the anchor runner on a 4×400 team that owns an NCAC record time of 3:53. Brea owns Wittenberg school records in both the 60-meter and 200-meter races. Brea’s time of 7.76 seconds in the 60-meter dash placed her 11th nationally.
Matthews was the Head Wrestling Coach at Big Walnut High School from 1984 to 1999. In that time span, he developed one of the most well-respected programs in central Ohio. Matthews sent at least one representative to the state tournament for 11 straight years, and for 12 of his 15 seasons as coach. His teams won 14 tournament championships.
Individually, Matthews coached 84 district qualifiers, 15 sectional champions, 24 league champions, and 20 state qualifiers, with five becoming state placers. During his tenure at Big Walnut, Matthews also coached baseball, tennis, and track.
Matthews is recognized for his contributions to the Central Ohio Wrestling Coaches Association.
