Big Walnut Elementary School fourth grade student Maria Brehm was recognized during the Thursday, January 19, Big Walnut Local School District Board of Education meeting as a Student of the Month.
Maria said what she likes most about school is math and challenging herself in reading. She just finished reading the Cam Jansen series and is currently reading Dr. Doolittle.
Maria wants to be a teacher when she grows up, preferably second or third grade, but she said she would also like to take time off to be a stay-at-home mom.
Outside of school, Maria enjoys soccer, basketball, playing with her friends and eating. She said she especially likes eating.
When asked what is the most important things in her life, Maria said her family and her church.
Her teacher, Lesley Cannell, said Maria is an outstanding role model at Big Walnut Elementary School.
“Not only does she work hard to do her best at all times, but she is also very concerned about her classmates and how they are doing,” Cannell said. “It’s not unusual to hear Maria say to a fellow student: ‘Let me show you how I figured that out’.”
Cannell also said that Maria’s kindness toward others is beautiful to observe.
“Not only does she assist fellow fourth graders, but she also volunteers her time once a week to assist second grade students,” Cannell said. “She has contributed to the BWE News Crew and is currently on safety patrol. Maria qualifies as a true Super Hero in our eyes.”
Maria is the daughter of David and Renee Brehm. She has two sisters, Alex is a Big Walnut High School senior and Katheryn is a Big Walnut Middle School 8th grade student; and a brother, Dawson, is a BWHS sophomore.
