Big Walnut Elementary School’s new principal says she has felt welcome here “from the minute I was hired.”

Robin Keating is the school’s new principal, replacing Mark Cooper.

With the retirement of former Superintendent Steve Mazzi, Angie Pollock became the new Big Walnut schools superintendent, and Cooper was promoted to assistant superintendent. Keating was selected to take over the reins at Big Walnut Elementary.

“I’m so impressed with the Big Walnut community,” Keating said. “It’s more hands on. You’re in the mix with everything; everything is so personal in every facet of this building.”

Keating said she has felt at home in the community from day one. She said meeting folks has been easy; families stop by, bring their children, say hello.

Keating also noted the welcome she has received from BWE teachers and support staff.

“The staff has been overwhelming; they’ve adopted me,” Keating said. “From the minute I was hired, they’ve been so welcoming. I know everyone here is kid-centered, helping make Big Walnut Elementary a great place to be.

“What I’ve learned of this school district and the BWE staff is that everyone embraces the idea of personalization to ensure the academic growth of all students to their maximum potential,” Keating continued. “As a professional learning community, we are committed to working tirelessly to provide challenging educational opportunities for children each day — every day, every child.”

“At Big Walnut Elementary School we have an open door policy,” Keating said. “We want BWE families to come to events and we welcome volunteering because this is their school; or else just stop by and say hello. It’s through being a collaborative learning community with consistent, honest and transparent communication that we can best serve our students.”

Keating is originally from Texas, but graduated from Heath (Ohio) High School. She earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) where she played softball. Keating’s first teaching job, in sixth grade, was in Heath, where she coached softball.

While teaching at Heath, Keating completed work on her master’s degree at Ashland University, then served as an assistant principal at Licking Heights Middle School. She comes to Big Walnut from New Albany, where she served as assistant principal at a grade 2-5 building.

Keating is currently a doctoral candidate in education leadership at Concordia University.

Keating also expressed kudos for building secretary Diana Inscho for her help in the transition to not only a new principal, but also in welcoming a new member of the Big Walnut community.

“I know Diana is the heart and soul of this building,” Keating said. “She’s been my lifeline.”

Keating said BWE will begin promoting the building using social media: Instagram: BigWalnut_BWE; Twitter: @BigWalnut_BWE; and Facebook: Big Walnut Elementary School.
