Staff Sgt. Shannon Smith, a member of the 545th Military Police Company, 607th Military Police Battalion, 8th Military Police Brigade, and recipient of the Bronze Star Medal was killed in action on Sept. 8, 2009, in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Each year for the past five years, on the closest Sunday to 9-11, Shannon Smith’s family has held a SSG Shannon Smith Memorial Car & Bike Show at Freedom Park in Sunbury to benefit the SSG Shannon M. Smith No Fear Fund administered by the Marion Foundation, and the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial.

This year, 68 classic cars, street rods and motorcycles registered for the sixth annual SSG Shannon Smith Memorial Car & Bike Show. Shannon’s father, Jim Smith, said about 300 people had stopped by to enjoy the show by early afternoon.

Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial founder Jerry Jodrey attended the show to accept a $2,075 check to help maintain the memorial.

“Everyone in this community is always happy to support the Shannon Smith Memorial Car and Bike Show,” Jodrey said. “Sergeant Smith paid the ultimate price serving his country, and we appreciate his family’s support of the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial.”
