During each Big Walnut school board meeting, the assistant superintendent presents a monthly “FTE” report that tracks monthly changes in the school district’s staff numbers.

With the 2015-16 school year underway, Assistant Superintendent Mark Cooper presented a more detailed FTE report during the Sept. 10 board meeting.

While student population numbers are not final until October school count month, when school districts statewide report populations served to the Ohio Department of Education, Cooper said that as of early September, Big Walnut is home to 3,443 students in pre-school through grade 12.

Big Walnut’s total staff as noted on the FTE report is 389.51. FTE stands for “full-time equivalent,” a term that may be confusing; the odd fractions in FTE reports is the result of part-time district employees and ESC (Educational Service Center of Central Ohio) paid support staff dedicated to the district.

Big Walnut has 20 administrators, including central office and administrators at the district’s seven school buildings; 10 administrative support staff; and eight staff under the ESC/Related Services umbrella.

Big Walnut’s students are served by a certified staff that includes 210.38 teachers and 22 ESC tutors. Classified staff is made up of 37.75 teaching assistants, 12 secretaries, 2.5 office aides, 14.20 kitchen staff members, 26.49 bus drivers, two mechanics who maintain the bus fleet, 20 custodians, and four employees who maintain the district’s buildings and grounds.

Big Walnut’s four elementary buildings (Hylen Souders, Harrison Street, GRE and BWE) serve 1,420 students.

General Rosecrans Elementary has the largest student population with 452 students. GRE has one administrator, 28.5 certified staff, 15.2 classified staff and 4.25 tutors.

Big Walnut Elementary is home to 334 students. BWE has one administrator, 19.5 certified staff, 8.4 classified staff and 4.25 tutors.

Hylen Souders serves 324 students. Souders has one administrator, 22.5 certified staff, seven classified staff and 4.25 tutors.

Harrison Street’s student population is 310. HSE has one administrator, 17.5 certified staff, 8.63 classified staff and 4.25 tutors.

Big Walnut Intermediate School is home to 536 students served by two administrators, 32.7 certified staff, seven classified staff and two tutors.

Big Walnut Middle School, with 523 students, has two administrators, 33.38 certified staff, 14.19 classified staff and two tutors.

Big Walnut High School has a student population of 964 and is served by four administrators, 55.3 certified staff, 22.07 classified staff and one tutor.

Final student population numbers are due at the Ohio Department of Education in October; those numbers will be final.
