Delaware Soil & Water Conservation District, in partnership with Franklin Soil & Water Conservation District and Preservation Parks of Delaware County, is sponsoring two exciting hands-on workshops for educators this summer.

The first workshop is entitled “UNDER Ground Geology Trips” and will be held on June 28-29. The second workshop is “Going with the Flow: Water Trips and More” on July 25-26. The workshops are open to teachers, youth leaders, park naturalists, and anyone who teaches youth about science.

“UNDER Ground Geology Trips” involves two days devoted to rocks, minerals, and Ohio’s geology and landforms. Hands-on activities are combined with field trips to Olentangy Indian Caverns, Shale Hollow Park, and an Ice Age exhibit. Each participant will leave with the Project Underground Natural Resources Education Guide and other excellent materials. The workshop fee is $50.

The two-day workshop, “Going with the Flow: Water Trips and More,” will include biological water assessments via a canoe trip (weather permitting) and tours of drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities. Hands-on lessons and resources will provide in depth coverage of water pollution, water use, water chemical testing, and freshwater assessments. The workshop fee is $50.

Participants may choose one or both of the workshops. Those who are interested may earn one semester hour of graduate credit through Ashland University for completing a two-day session and accompanying assignment. Completion of both workshops and requirements will provide two semester hours of graduate credit. The cost is $190 per credit hour.

Engage in instructor-led activities, presentations by field professionals, field trips, participant-driven learning and evaluation, and bring home outstanding materials that are adaptable to many age groups. Workshops will be held at the nature center of Deer Haven Park, 4183 Liberty Road, Delaware.

Detailed information, including a registration form, can be found at www.delawareswcd.org or by calling 740-368-1921. Registrations are open and will be accepted until the first day of each two-day workshop.

The workshops are supported by the Environmental Education Council of Ohio and are made possible in part by a generous grant from the Ohio Environmental Education Fund.
