The Sunbury Eagles Aerie #3614 have turned a tragedy into a worthy charity, this year donating $8,339 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

The money was raised from the 7th annual Dave Cupps Memorial Golf Outing on June 24.

Cupps, the former president of the local chapter of the fraternal organization, was kidnapped and murdered in 2011. The members have kept Cupps’ memory alive, though, by hosting an annual event in his name.

In past years, the local Eagles have donated more than 17,000 to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers. Last year, they raised $4,000 for St. Jude’s Hospital, and were hoping to beat that amount this summer.

They did, thanks to donations by: Delmar Distributing; Village Hair Company; Superior Beverage; Table Rock Golf Course; Molly’s Flowers; Royal American Golf; Bubbles and Bows; Wyandot Golf; Village View Golf; Auto Zone; Fire House Tavern; Oxford Oil; Certified Oil & Gas; NAPA; Arrowhead Golf; Sunbury VFW; Advanced Auto; Kelly Vance; Amy Hillman; Chris Dixon; Linda Boyd; Jim Coyan; Chris Norman; John Beach; Jackie Pendley; Kim Harper; Kevin and Brenda Ballog; and Jody Shoaf.

The Sunbury Eagles is at 235 North Columbus St. For more information, call 740-965-6984.

Even if you’re not an Eagles member, you can still donate to the cause and have a good time doing so, at the 33rd annual Musicians Against Childhood Cancer/Bluegrass Classic at Hoover Y-Park from July 19-22. Since 2000, the event, in memory of Mandy Adkins, has donated more than $935,000 to St. Jude and the YMCA.

This year’s lineup includes many of the genre’s top musical acts, such as Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver; Lonesome River Band; Larry Sparks & the Lonesome Ramblers; Grascals and Mo Pitney. There will also be tributes to the Stanley Brothers; Jim & Jesse McReynolds; and the Trio (Dolly Parton/Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt).

Headliner musicians donate their time and talent to the festival. Event organizer Darrel Adkins receives no salary from the Galena-based MACC.
