Portman, Brown Honor Columbus Officer with Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery

At a ceremony hosted by the Columbus Police Academy, Senators Portman and Brown presented Columbus Police Officer Keith Kise with the Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery.

“We will never forget the work that our police officers do every day to keep us safe. Officer Kise is incredible example of bravery, poise, and grace under pressure,” said Sen. Portman. “He embodies what law enforcement is all about, and I’m honored to have presented him with the Congressional Badge of Bravery.”

“I couldn’t be more proud of Officer Kise for his bravery and dedication to his profession. He is a humble hero who risked his life and undoubtedly deserving of this great honor,” said Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs.

In 2015, Officer Kise risked his life and personal safety to serve a fugitive arrest warrant for the leader of a Columbus street gang, which had been investigated for unsolved homicides and other federal and local offenses. While attempting to apprehend the fugitive, Officer Kise led fellow officers into a barrage of machine gun fire to take down the fugitive and to lead a young child on the scene to safety.

The Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery, which Portman and Brown presented to Officer Kise, honors law enforcement officers for exceptional acts of bravery. Law enforcement officers who receive the medal either sustained physical injury or risked physical injury or death while in the line of duty.

Portman and Brown were joined at the ceremony on June 30 by Columbus Police Department Deputy Chief Richard Bash, U.S. Attorney Ben Glassman, U.S. Marshal Peter Tobin, as well as friends and family of Officer Kise.
