Sunbury Lions Club member Glenn Evans recently announced that Big Walnut Middle School seventh-grade student Sierra Sanders won the local Lions Club Peace Poster Contest, and will advance to district poster judging.

Jonathan McVeigh and Emily Bryant were runners-up.

Each year, Lions clubs around the world sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups to encourage young people worldwide ages 11 through 13 to artistically express their visions of peace.

Each year’s contest consists of an original theme. This year’s Peace Poster Contest theme is “Sharing Peace.”

Participants use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint, to express the theme. The works created are unique and express the young artists’ life experiences and culture.

Sanders will receive $100 for her winning effort. McVeigh and Bryant will receive $50 each, and the middle school art program will also receive $100 from the Sunbury Lions Club.

Big Walnut Middle School art teacher Nancy Crawford said 202 students submitted entries in the Lions Club International contest.

“It’s all about world peace, and the students have to figure out their own concepts,” Crawford said. “It’s also a student-judged contest.”

Twenty-four international finalists are selected each year, representing the work of more than 350,000 young participants worldwide. Posters are shared globally via the Internet, the media and exhibits around the world.
