The Big Walnut High School annual Christmas concert never fails to fill every seat in the high school auditorium.
This year was no different, as choir director and assistant band director Lisa Huston, band director and assistant choir director Craig Porter, and music department students filled the auditorium the evening of Dec. 9 with this year’s holiday offering.
Following the traditional processional, the program began with the 123-member combined choirs singing “Musica Dei” (Music of the Best Gift) by Ruth Morris Gray, followed by “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”. “Here We Come A-Caroling” was performed by the Big Walnut vocal select ensemble, with a solo by Jordan Apple.
Next, the choirs sang “Fruitcake” by Philip Hagemann, followed by “December Prayer.”
The choir portion of the evening concluded with “the Hallelujah Chorus” from “Messiah” with instrumental accompaniment provided by the Big Walnut wind ensemble.
Following a brief intermission to rearrange the stage, members of the high school wind ensemble opened with “And All The Bells Shall Ring!” By Rob Romeyn, followed by “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “American Bell Carol” by Robert W. Smith.
The high school concert band opened with James Swearingen’s arrangements of “The Gift of Christmas” and “A Jingle Bells Fantasy.”
The evening concluded with the high school concert band playing “Santa’s Wild Ride” by Robert W. Smith.
