Of all the sports stories during 2015, Big Walnut High School’s varsity baseball team making its first-ever Division II state appearance on June 5 at Huntington Park trumped everything else in the deck.
Big Walnut head coach Chris Holly said his 22-10 squad would use its first-ever state appearance to be a stepping stone for more postseason appearances in the future.
“This team is going to be remembered for a long time at Big Walnut,” Holly said. “This group accomplished something that no other Big Walnut baseball team has ever done before. A lot of our success this season was because of our five seniors — Michael, Matt, Brandon, Chad and Brayden. They played hard and will be difficult to replace, but we are a young team and will have a lot of experience coming back for next season.”
Big Walnut baseball experienced significant milestones last season, including a record-setting 22-inning win against New Albany, and a first-ever regional championship when they defeated Steubenville 10-3 on May 29 at Zanesville.
