The Big Walnut area is extremely fortunate to have its own local newspaper, The Sunbury News. You can always count on The Sunbury News for information about local events and issues. The coverage of our school age children’s events, activities and accomplishments is superb. Most of these stories never end up in The Delaware Gazette.
We have already lost This Week Big Walnut and The Big Walnut News. The This Week Delaware paper may have one or two stories about the Big Walnut area, but also about other areas in and outside of Delaware County that may or may not be of interest to Big Walnut readers. I thank Gary Henery and Lenny Lepola for their extraordinary efforts and ongoing commitment to supply news about our area. I also thank the advertisers and subscribers who support this valuable asset.
Unfortunately, there are fewer advertisers supporting The Sunbury News and circulation has dropped to 1,000. With an out-of-state owner who just closed eight local newspapers it owns, I am afraid the writing may be on the proverbial wall for The Sunbury News.
As in the case of any local business that closes, people always lament its demise. I hope it does not come to that but we may be perilously close. Newspapers nationally are on decline due to the ease of obtaining information on the internet. You will not be able to see photos and stories of local events, school activities, athletics and honors if The Sunbury News ceases to exist because there will be no Lenny to gather the information, take the photos and publish it all.
Spread the word before it’s too late. Subscribe to The Sunbury News. Spend your advertising dollars here in our community. Save this local asset!
