Big Walnut jumped out to a 13-7 lead thanks to an 11-1 run in the first eight minutes of play. But the host Yellow Jackets answered by winning the second period with a 17-7 outburst to take a 24-20 halftime lead en route to a 60-49 Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division victory over the Golden Eagles Friday night in Mount Vernon. The Yellow Jackets went on to outscore Big Walnut 36-29 in the second half.


Mount Vernon (4-3, 1-2 OCC), which went on to outscore Big Walnut 36-29 in the second half, was led by Jared Pryor with a game-high 13 points. Alex Arck checked in with 11 points and 8 rebounds.


Senior Nick Herbert paced Big Walnut (1-4, 0-3 OCC) with 12 points. He was joined by junior Zac Asher who finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Logan Boyd contributed 9 points and a team-leading 2 assists. Herbert and Asher came up with three steals apiece.


The Yellow Jackets outscored the Golden Eagles 17-9 at the foul line while cashing in on 5 of 13 three-point attempts. Big Walnut finished at 3-for-16 from behind the arc. The Golden Eagle defense forced Mount Vernon into 17 turnovers, thanks to 3 steals apiece by Herbert and Asher. Big Walnut’s offense turned the ball over 13 times with the ‘Jackets Alex Glibert coming up with 4 steals.


WORTHINGTON KILBOURNE 56, BIG WALNUT 38 — The Golden Eagles dug themselves an early hole and, despite a solid second half, never could climb all the way out as the visiting Wolves rolled to a 56-38 Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division victory last Tuesday night (December 17) in Sunbury.


Big Walnut (1-3, 0-2 OCC) fell behind 17-8 after the first eight minutes and, following a 17-12 second period run by Kilbourne (3-1, 3-0 OCC), trailed 34-20 heading into the intermission.


The Golden Eagles tightened up its defense in the final two quarters, but was outscored 14-13 in the third and 8-5 in the fourth to account for the final 18-point margin on the scoreboard.


Senior Logan Boyd was the lone Big Walnut player to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points. Junior Zac Asher followed with 7 and junior Matt Tarney with 5 points.


Kilbourne had three players score in double figures, including Mike Chambers with a game-leading 15 points, Seth Hill with 13 and Griffin Dahn with 11 points.
