Summer dates to remember

Summer is in full swing, the Hartford Independent Fair is hovering on the horizon, and school is just around the bend. But not to worry, it’s still summer, and there are summer activities and important dates to post on the fridge, like the Big Walnut Friends Who Share’s Annual Brett’s Book Bag Stuffing at Condit Presbyterian Church and Sunbury UMC’s clothing sale.

In the Condit Presbyterian Church basement volunteers stuff student book bags with school supplies needed for the approaching school year as part of the Brett Stelzer Book Bag Project, part of the Big Walnut Friends Who Share Back-To-School Project that furnishes school supplies to Big Walnut families in need.

Typically the book bag-stuffing event had been held during the first week in August to accommodate Big Walnut students returning to school in mid-August. This year’s book bag stuffing will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 2.

“Please feel free to bring along a friend or two to help, as this is a great way to help our kids,” said Gloria Stelzer. “It’s also a great way to teach our kids to serve others, and the more helping hands we have stuffing the bags, the sooner the task is completed.”

Contributions for school supplies and bag purchases can be made in Brett’s memory anytime during the year. Anyone wishing to donate to BWFWS in Brett’s memory can send their check to: BWFWS, PO Box 424, Sunbury, Ohio 43074 and earmark the check for purchasing bags and supplies in Brett’s Memory.

Condit Presbyterian Church is located at 15102 Hartford Road at the intersection of Hartford Road and Ohio 605.

Members of Sunbury United Methodist Church will hold an adult and children’s gently-used clothing sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, in the church’s lower level multipurpose room. Profits from the sale will be donated to Big Walnut Friends Who Share, the local community’s all volunteer, grass roots social service agency, to help with their ministries in the community.

Community members are asked to donate clean gently-used items, including accessories, hats, purses, bedding, towels and toys. Drop donations off in the Clothing Box in the entry of the church no later than Thursday, July 23.

Sunbury UMC is located at 100 West Cherry Street, corner of U.S. 36/Ohio 37 and Ohio3, in Sunbury.
