Big Walnut Local School District Superintendent Steve Mazzi made an appearance at last Wednesday’s (February 5) Sunbury Village Council meeting to give a brief report on the state of the School District, and to introduce School Board Vice President Mindy Meyer, who will serve as the 2014 Board of Education liaison with the Village.

“Since becoming superintendent I have made it a point of keeping the doors open between the Village and the schools,” Mazzi said. “That’s even more important now, especially with topics like the outlet mall coming to Berkshire Township. With the mall on the horizon, now it’s even more critical that the lines of communication remain open between us.”

Mazzi explained that while the Ohio Department of Education has changed the state report card to a letter-grade format statewide, the Big Walnut District is still performing at a level the community can be proud of.

“Our staff continues to do an excellent job teaching each and every child we serve,” Mazzi said. “There’s truth in the saying that as the schools go, so goes the community.”

Meyer said she’s excited to be taking over as Pam Lillie’s replacement as the Board’s liaison with the Village. Lillie did not seek reelection in the November General Election.

“I will also be the Board of Education representative for Harrison Street Elementary School when that building opens up,” Meyer said. “I’m looking forward to working with all of you.”
