Members of the Big Walnut High School Competition Cheerleading Team closed their season out last weekend at the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators State Cheerleading Competition at Bowling Green University.
The squad, last year’s OASSA Division II State Champions, had an undefeated season leading up to State. Because they were bumped up to Division I this year, Big Walnut High School Cheerleading Coach Sarah Kern-Kildow said the team set a goal to place in the top 10 at state.
“The girls finished at sixth place at OASSA State Cheer Competition,” Kern-Kildow said. “We competed in Division I Non-Mount and there were 21 teams in our division. We superseded our goal for our first year in Division I and we couldn’t be more proud.”
Kern-Kildow said placing sixth at DI State was an amazing finish to an exceptional year.
“We showed determination, perseverance and strength, going against all the big schools in the state,” Kern-Kildow said. “Competing with and beating the big dogs really earned so much respect for the girls and our school. The girls hit a super solid routine and we displayed very difficult tumbling passes, which showed multiple full squad elite tricks.
“The coaches could not be more proud of these girls,” Kern-Kildow added. “Such great character and such awesome kids we have the honor to coach. Through all the changes, roadblocks and wrenches thrown at us, we kept regrouping and pushing forward. It was a strong finish to a strong season.”
