For a variety of reasons ranging from the state of the economy, unemployment of a household’s one or both breadwinners, or even a stroke of plain old-fashioned bad luck, there are folks in the Big Walnut area who live close to the edge and reach out to Big Walnut Friends Who Share (BWFWS).

During the school year, especially around holidays, students, church congregations and youth groups, and local businesses roll up their sleeves to help raise funds and food for eastern Delaware County’s grass roots, all-volunteer social service agency.

During summer months, however, folks are still in need but dollars and food donations are down, said Friends Who Share Community Liaison Coordinator Pam Hammers.

“Summer is a low time for group and school donations, but a high time of need for food,” Hammers said. “We’re asking members of the community to please consider donating the items most in need — peanut butter, jelly, cereal, canned tuna or chicken breast, spaghetti sauce, pasta, pancake mix and syrup.”

To help raise funds during slow summer months, Hammers said Friends Who Share volunteers will hold a Yard Sale inside the Sunbury Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21.

“All proceeds will go directly to support Big Walnut Friends Who Share,” Hammers said. “If you would like to donate items for the sale, please bring them to Sunbury Town Hall on Thursday, June 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.”

Big Walnut High School seniors graduated Saturday, and Friends Who Share volunteers are already looking ahead to the 2014-15 school year. They’re collecting items for the annual Brett Stelzer Book Bag Project through July 13 to prepare for next school year. Hammers said to contact Kathy Kees at 740-965-9668 for more information.

The Big Walnut Friends Who Share Store at 216 High Street in Sunbury is open to those in need on Wednesday mornings from 9 until 11:30 a.m., and during the evening on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:30 until 8 p.m.

On the second Saturday of each month, senior citizens can visit the Friends Who Share Store from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Volunteers help out at the center from 9 a.m. until 11:30 every Monday morning. The store accepts donated items on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

To volunteer, to donate needed items, or to make a financial contribution to Friends Who Share projects, stop at the store during open hours, or call 740-965-9596. Cash donations may be sent to Big Walnut Friends Who Share, P.O. Box 424, Sunbury, 43074.
