Ohio Capital Conference Championship repeats are not an easy feat to accomplishment.

Once you win you have a target on your back; everyone is after your crown. But someone forgot to tell that to the Big Walnut High School Competition Cheerleading Team. They won the OCC Capital Division Crown in 2013, and on Sunday did a repeat by taking home the 2014 crown.

To put the squad’s OCC Cap record in perspective, they placed first in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, and now 2014.

“We won the OCC Cap competition again,” said Big Walnut High School Cheerleading Coach Sarah Kern-Kildow. “We have a perfect season to date. The girls placed First and were Grand Champs at Americheer Spirit Series, First at Cheer For A Cure, First at the Ohio State Competition, and now First in the OCC Capital Division.”

Named as OCC All-Stars were Sydney King, Samantha Buxton, Kylie McKenzie and Devin Reardon, Kern-Kildow said, and the season is not over. The squad competes at the Arnold Classic on March 1 and then, on March 2, defends their 2013 State Championship title at the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators at St. John Arena.

“It’s been a very trying year with so many injured team members and other circumstances beyond our control, such as moving into Division I at the upcoming State competition,” Kern-Kildow said. “We went into the year with goals of a repeat of last year’s OASSA Division II State Champions. Now we have a new goal of Division 1, to place in the Top 15.”

Kern-Kildow said the squad’s routine changes almost weekly, and that she has never coached so many strong, determined cheerleaders who are persevering and fighting for their wins.

“They girls are my little warriors, never giving up on themselves or each other,” she said. “And with only one senior and two juniors on the squad there is so much promise for years to come. As coaches we are so proud of the girls and looking forward to continuing our success.”

Also competing at OCCs were other Big Walnut cheerleaders in a division called non-tumbling, in which the girls completed a routine with cheers and dances, but no tumbling. Big Walnut also placed first in this division.

“We like to bring our entire cheer program to the OCC competition,” Kern-Kildow said. “We brought our Middle School cheerleaders, who performed exhibition, and our entire high school, who competed and won their divisions. It was a great day in Big Walnut Cheerleading.”

Members of the 2014 Big Walnut High School Competition Cheerleading Team are Sydney King, Stephanie Sutton, Allison Daugherty, Kennedy Walls, Devin Reardon, Kylie McKenzie, Sam Buxton, Hannah Sullivan, Taylor Grieser, Avery Devol, Paige Parsley, Katelyn Conner, Marisa Hageman and Danielle Herman.

Sarah Kern Kildow, Kristen Hackenbrach, and Beth Stimmel coach the Competition Cheerleading Team.
