Big Walnut’s three seniors, Jeremy Bok, Kyle Duncan and Ryan Grieser, closed out their high school baseball careers with honors at the annual Golden Eagle Awards Banquet held Thursday, May 29, in the BWHS cafeteria.
Bok and Grieser shared the Golden Eagle Award which is given annually to a senior with 3.00 Grade Point Average and is based on 40 percent character, 30 percent scholarship and 30 percent athletic ability. Duncan was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award.
Joining the three seniors at the podium were sophomore Nick Moser, who was awarded the Offensive Player of the Year Award, and junior Matt Tarney, who was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year. Juniors Brandon Daniels and Brayden Shepherd were co-recipients of the Rudy Owen Memorial Award.
Golden Eagle head coach Chris Holly, who guided Big Walnut to a 16-12 overall record which included a sixth-place finish with a 6-8 mark in the Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division. Mount Vernon and Olentangy Orange shared the Capital Division title with 11-3 records. Olentangy came in third at 8-5 followed by Delaware Hayes (8-6) and New Albany 7-7. Worthington Kilbourne (4-9) and Franklin Heights (0-14) completed the division standings.
Four Golden Eagles earned All-OCC Capital honors. Moser earned First Team Outfield recognition in the outfield while Tarney (Shortstop), Shepherd (Utility) and Duncan (Catcher/Pitcher) were selected to the Second Team. Bok was also recognized as an OCC Scholar Athlete (Senior, 3.50 Grade Point Average).
Moser was also honored as a First Team Division II All-Central District and a Second Team Division II All-Ohio selection. Joining Moser on the All-District team were Duncan and Shepherd as Second Team selections and Bok and Tarney as Honorable Mention Honorees.
Holly awarded 14 varsity letters to members of his 38-player squad, led by Bok and Duncan who received their third letter and Grieser who earned his first letter. Second-year letter recipients were juniors Garrett Grover, Shepherd and Tarney as well as Moser. Seven players joined Grieser as the recipients of their first varsity letter, including juniors Michael Blackburn, Chad Little and Daniels; sophomores Kordell Davis, Jakob Evans and Tom Fleser along with freshman Parker Imertreijs.
Bok and Duncan were also awarded their Senior Plaque.
Earning Junior Varsity letters were juniors Conner Leidtke and Nicholas Momeni; sophomores Nicholas Green, Kevin Heltz, Andrew Klamfoth, Wayne Lambert, Bret Stacy, Bradley Whitesed and Jacob Young; and freshmen Daniel Dimitroff, William Holland and Henry von Hollen.
Freshman numerals were presented to Jason Bailey, Alec Crane, Wesley Hammond, Kyle Humphries, Andrew Minor, Weston Mullins, Alex Ramsey, Owen Ramsey, Philip Roberto, Kobe Swackhammer, Ryan Taurone and Drake Wilson-Hobart.
Ten members of the Golden Eagle baseball squad were recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom as Big Walnut Scholar Athletes (Varsity Letter, 3.20 Grade Point Average). Honored were Blackburn, Bok, Daniels, Duncan, Evans, Fleser, Grieser, Imertreijs, Moser and Tarney.
Assisting Holly with the awards presentations were assistant coaches Carl Weiss and John Schone along with volunteer assistants Joe Lewis, Matt Wilson, Mick Holly, Charlie Rowley and Jason McLead.
