Big Walnut High School freshman Colbi Borland won the school’s first-ever Girls OCC Cross-Country championship with a 19:58 win last Saturday at Newark’s Evans Athletic Complex. The week before, Borland took ownership of the high school’s Girls XC record with a time of 18:59.1 at the Thomas Worthington Invitational.
Cross-Country Coach Kevin Lewis said the Big Walnut Girls XC Team went into the 2016 OCC championship race thinking they had a chance at winning their first conference title since 2001.
“But we had some late season injuries, and a band competition and a softball tournament pulled some key runners out of the meet,” Lewis said. “Despite the setbacks, the team finished a close third to champion New Albany and runner up Canal Winchester.”
Lewis said sophomore Ann Armbrust finished sixth to earn First Team All-OCC honors. Junior Leksi Murnieks, freshman Alina Pecci, sophomore Hannah Moroz and senior Caroline Craig-Bowden were the other team scorers.
“The boys team finished fourth,” Lewis said. “They were led by junior Will Hefner’s 14th place finish in 17:40. Kaleb Disbennet and DJ Werner helped pace the Eagles.”
Next up is the district championship this Saturday, October 22, at Watkins Memorial High School.
