Big Walnut 52, Canal Winchester 47

The Golden Eagles started fast and held on late to notch a league win over the host Indians Friday night (Jan. 27).

Big Walnut (2-13, 2-4) was up 17-15 after one and, thanks to an 11-5 second quarter, 28-20 at halftime. Canal Winchester (10-7, 2-4) won each of the final two quarters, but couldn’t slow down BW’s Ben Saxe, who finished with five three-pointers and a game-high 27 points.

From Friday

Delaware Christian used a 30-point second quarter to pull away from visiting Genoa Christian Friday night.

Already up 17-7 after one, the Eagles’ 30-12 second gave them a commanding 47-19 lead at the break.

Andrew Dunnavant led the way with 24 points while Isaac Rindfuss added 15, Curtis Bean chipped in 12 and Adam Standley had 11.

Girls Basketball

Big Walnut was right in the thick of things most of the night, but visiting Canal Winchester won the fourth quarter 28-16 en route to a 65-54 OCC win Friday (Jan. 27) in Sunbury.

Kelly Kreager and Erin Boehm led the Golden Eagles (11-6, 3-4) with 11 points apiece.

Boys Swimming OCC-Capital Championships

Big Walnut finished second with 285 points at Friday and Saturday’s (Jan. 28-29) OCC championship meet in New Albany.

Dominic Carifa and Wesley Hammond won individual titles, taking top honors in the 100 and 200 freestyles in 50.99 seconds and 1:49.85.

Hammond was also solid in the 500 freestyle, nabbing runner-up honors in 4:57.64.

Other top BW performances belonged to the 200 medley relay team, which picked up first-place points in 1:51.74; and the quartet of Nick Dimitroff, Colin White, Nate Dimitroff and Zach MacDonald, who took the top four spots in the diving competition.

Also: Liberty 1st at OCC-Buckeye Division Championships.

Girls Swimming OCC-Capital Championships

Big Walnut finished third at Friday and Saturday’s OCC championship meet in New Albany, closing with 130 points.

The Golden Eagles got their two top-three showings in the relay events, finishing third in the 400 freestyle relay (4:43.23) and 200 medley relay (2:24.64).

Also: Liberty 1st at OCC-Buckeye Division Championships.

Wrestling Region 5

Host Big Walnut doubled up New Albany 48-24 in its first-round matchup, but fell to Watkins Memorial 61-15 in the Region 5 quarterfinal Wednesday (Jan. 25) in Sunbury.

Big Walnut got pins from Bailey Munday at 120, Cole Foster at 132, Ryan Colletta at 138, Carson Dearth at 152 and Luke Apple at 195 on the way to the lopsided win.

Points were harder to come by against the Warriors, though. Munday beat Alec Fulwider 17-2, Josh Halbakken pinned Brad Swearingen in 1:37 at 145 and Dearth beat Kevin Mullins 13-5 to smooth out BW’s scoring summary.
