YOUNGSTOWN (06/30/2017)— The Youngstown State bowling team finished its first season ranking in the top 25 based on its performance on the lanes, and now it is being recognized as a top program in the classroom.
The Penguins finished the 2016-17 academic year with a 3.22 team GPA. That earned them a spot on the National Tenpin Coaches Association’s Academic Team Awards list, which celebrates teams that finished with a team GPA of at least 3.2. YSU was one of 36 programs that reached the mark, coming in at No. 33 in the nation. Rachel Ellis of Westerville is a Sophomore Forensic Science major on the team.
“Our first year was a year of accomplishments, and this one is one of the more significant ones,” head coach Chelsea Gilliam said. “We had a very young team, and it’s great that our student-athletes stepped up both on and off the lanes. Our goals will always be to be competitive on the lanes and successful in the classroom.”
Individually, three Penguins were recognized by the NTCA for having a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for the academic year. Emily Dietz, Kirsten Ensminger and Mackenzie Olesky were among 229 honorees in 50 NCAA programs that were honored.
