Friday Night Futbol

What a cool idea! Since the varsity football team plays at Dublin Scioto on Thursday night, Big Walnut’s boys soccer JV and Varsity games against Scioto will take place at 5 p.m. Sept. 8 at Big Walnut High School.

These Friday Night Lights will feature Food Trucks from Dan’s Deli and Holy Taco; Cheerleaders; a raffle drawing and Graeters Ice Cream.

The event’s promoters said 10% of food truck sales goes back to the team.

Swim and Dive meeting

Big Walnut High School students interested in participating in swim and dive this winter there will be a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, 9/11/17 in the BWHS Atrium. If you can’t attend, please see Mrs. Piper in the athletic office later that week for the information.

Remembering a Runner

Linda J. (Musick) Evans’ life was cut tragically short on July 31, 2017. This S.T.E.M. teacher, devout Jehovah’s Witness, wife, mother, grandmother and avid runner was hit by a car in Westerville. Shortly after her death, pairs of running shoes were placed at the scene of the accident. On Aug. 3, an informal Memorial Gathering was held at McNamara Park, 7049 Big Walnut Rd., Galena.

Crew Countdown

The Columbus Crew SC have three more home games this season: 1 p.m. Sunday versus Sporting Kansas City; 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 versus New York Red Bulls; and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 versus D.C. United. There are three away games as well, with the final regular season match Oct. 22.

The Crew are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a 13-12-3 record. Barring a collapse, they should qualify for the playoffs.

Former Browns update

Remember Johnny Manziel? The former Cleveland Browns quarterback tried out for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League, but the 24-year-old evidently had too many red flags.

Remember Brock Osweiler? The former Browns quarterback, who wasn’t good enough to be the Broncos’ starter, was re-signed by Denver to be their backup. Say what?

Remember Joe Haden? The former all-pro cornerback was released by the Browns. Division rivals Pittsburgh picked Haden up, and the Steelers’ first game is this Sunday against Cleveland. Quarterback DeShone Kizer could get a rude introduction to the National Football League, but then again, rookies sometimes have lit up the Steelers’ secondary.
