BBB Warning: Scam Callers Spoofing Franklin County Courts

Columbus, OH (October 8, 2018) – BBB is warning Central Ohio residents to beware of an uptick in scam callers claiming to be from Franklin County Courts. Phone scammers are repeatedly calling consumers to collect “fines”, and leaving messages with fake case numbers.

“I have about four people calling me, leaving messages,” says one local woman. “I called Franklin County Courts. They said it was a scam.”

After she ignored their calls, the scammers began calling the woman’s sister and mother, saying they owe money as well. One of the callers, using the name Jamal James, left a message claiming she would be located and her employer would be notified that she owed Franklin County a fine. According to Franklin County Courts, many people have been calling and reporting similar experiences.

To combat scam calls, BBB offers the following tips:

Do not answer calls from numbers you do not recognize. If it’s a legitimate contact, they will leave a message. Even if a scammer leaves a message, this will give you time to think about what is being asked of you.

Be cautious of automated messages asking you to “Press 9” to be taken off of their call list. Pressing your keypad is another way to alert the caller that they have reached an active number, and they will continue to call and sell your number to other scammers as well.

Beware of scammers calling and impersonating legitimate businesses, organizations and charities. The best thing you can do to prevent yourself from falling victim is to hang up, find the appropriate phone number and call them directly to speak to a representative.

Join the Do Not Call Registry ( to cut down on legitimate telemarketing and sales calls. Although it won’t stop scammers, you’ll get fewer calls, making it easier to spot the fraudulent ones.

Write down the phone number of callers violating the Do Not Call Registry and file a scam report with BBB Scam Tracker and the FTC’s Do Not Call List. has an app that takes you off any phone call that comes in as a robo call (an automated or machine-made call). The app is free for landlines and $1.99 for cell phones.

Consumers are encouraged to report scams to BBB Scam Tracker to help protect others in the Central Ohio community.
