For the past two years, Table Rock Construction owner Shawn Walker has sponsored a Donut Eating Contest as part of the Village of Sunbury’s Christmas on the Square Celebration.
This year’s setup was simple: plain donuts coated in powdered sugar, eight donuts to a plate, three minutes to eat, and nothing to drink during the contest. When the final whistle blew any contestant with a partially eaten donut in hand could finish that donut; and there was a gallon of milk on hand to wet whistles following the final whistle.
The winner of Castle Rock Construction’s Second Annual Donut Eating Contest was Logan Smith, with seven donuts downed in three minutes. The runner-up was Matt Russell, who consumed six of the dry donuts during the contest.
Smith, who refrained from food all day to prepare for the gastronomic contest, said the powdered sugar added a definite degree of difficulty to the competition.
“The powdered sugar quickly dried my mouth out, making it hard to swallow after the first two donuts,” Smith said. “If we had been allowed to sip milk during the contest I think I could have doubled my number.”
Walker said the ten contestants each signed a waiver of responsibility prior to the contest – just in case; and one contest judge kept a cell phone handy, ready to call 911 if a dry mouthed contestant choked at the finish.
“It looks like the Donut Eating Contest is destined to become a Christmas on the Square tradition,” Walker said after placing the 2016 Top Donut Medal on the winner. “Even though for safety reasons we limited the contest to 10 participants, there was a huge crowd present cheering on their favorite donut eaters.”
