Each year students at General Rosecrans Elementary School collect canned and dry goods during one week in November. This year’s school-wide goal was to collect 1,000 food items, with all collected items benefiting the Big Walnut Friends Who Share Food Pantry.
Collection boxes were located in each classroom and community donations were be accepted during regular school hours in the main office. GRE Food Drive Coordinator Gretchen Currie said the students made the food drive into a contest, the GRE Food Drive Turkey Trot. Each classroom had a graph on the wall, and a turkey climbed the graph as food items were brought in.
“Gina Crawford’s 23 third-graders brought in 376 food items to place first in the Turkey Trot,” Currie said. “The entire school brought in 1,196 items, exceeding their goal of 1,000 items.”
Susan Stein’s a.m. kindergarten came in second, Kari Thomas’s first-grade students came in third, but Currie said every GRE student was a winner when the food items were delivered to Friends Who Share.
“All the students at General Rosecrans Elementary did a great job helping families in need in their own community,” Currie said. “They learned about helping to feed the hungry. We are all very proud of their accomplishment.”
