On Sunday, November 12 at 2 p.m., members of the Sunbury Halter and Saddle 4-H Club paid tribute to some soldiers of the Korea Police Action and Vietnam Conflict buried in Sunbury Memorial Park.
Also participating are the American Legion Post 457 and Big Walnut Area Historical Society. The club members will honor about 50 soldiers at this time since there are too many to do that day. Others will be honored next Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day in 2018. Some will be honored in the Spring when Big Walnut Middle School has their Community Service Day.
After the November 12 tributes, the 4-H Club had a pot luck supper in the Sunbury Town Hall and invites local veterans. After the supper, the club members will prepare Christmas cards to send to U. S. soldiers through Friends of Our Troops.
This project was started by the above participants in 2008 starting with Revolutionary soldiers buried in Big Walnut area cemeteries. The 4-H club has continued this Community Service Project each Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day since 2008. Suzanne Allen, a club advisor, looks up the soldier records online and a 4-H Club member reads the record for each soldier at their grave. The club recently collected donations to help the American Legion Post 457 buy some needed flag holders to place at soldier graves without them.
This project has made Patriotism important to Sunbury Halter and Saddle 4-H Club members and alumni through the years.
