Constituents of Ohio’s 12th Congressional District raised their voices in song outside Rep. Pat Tiberi’s Worthington office recently. They sang traditional holiday carols with fresh lyrics that expressed their strong opposition to current Republican tax reform bills.

Ohioans had caroled outside of Sen. Rob Portman’s Toledo and Columbus offices earlier, while other groups have been holding similar caroling events across the country.

Tiberi, who announced he would resign from Congress in January 2018, voted in favor of the House tax reform bill. Sen. Portman has been actively promoting the Senate version of the tax reform bill. The bills will lower taxes for the wealthy and large corporations while ultimately raising taxes for the middle class and poor. Polls have repeatedly shown that fewer than one third of Americans approve of these bills.

The caroling offered a fun way for constituents to vocalize their resistance. But the new lyrics underscored the serious, negative impact that these tax bills will have on tens of millions of people.

To the tune of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” carolers sang “We wish for a better tax bill and protected health care. We won’t quit until we get it, and remember, we vote!”

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” became “Be Mindful Shameful Gentlemen”:

Be mindful, shameful gentlemen,

Stop robbing from the poor

Remember revolution starts

And ends on your front door

God save us from your greedy plan

To kill Obamacare

With tidings of voter outrage, voter outrage,

Oh tidings of voter outrage

A reimagined “Jingle Bells” poked fun at Republican leaders in Congress:

Jingle bells, Paul Ryan smells

McConnell laid an egg

Their tax plot will hurt a lot

And shoot them in the leg

Oh, dashing through the Senate

In an ill-considered bill

The Republicans are plotting

Their greedy, reckless shill

And taking all of us

Captive for the ride

We can’t believe they’d do this to us

They’re not on our side!

Instead of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” carolers sang:

Have yourself a merry little tax scam

Let your hearts be light

From now on our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little tax scam

Make the poorest pay

From now on

Our troubles will be miles away

Just like back in Nixon days

Happy trickle down for more

Faithful senate who are dear to us

Gather near to us once more

Through the years we all will win together

If the loopholes allow

Hang the cuts upon the highest bough

And have yourself a merry tax scam now

After caroling outside, the constituents marched into Rep. Tiberi’s office to sing additional songs and to act out “A Tax Scam Christmas Carol,” which highlighted not only the negative financial consequences of the bills but also their possible impact on health care coverage. The short skit included Congressman Scrooge, his staffer, Buckeye Cratchit, and the ghosts of tax policy past and future.
