On Saturday, April 9, Big Walnut/DACC FFA member Rachel Sherman traveled sleet and snow to the Ohio State Agricultural Technical Institute for the state Dairy Cattle Evaluation CDE (Career Development Event) where she placed third in the state.
Big Walnut ag science teacher Jeff Stimmell said Rachel is an eighth-grade student at Big Walnut Middle School who competed in the Middle School Division. Rachel will receive an award at the Ohio FFA State Convention in May.
During competition Rachel had to judge five classes of dairy cattle on confirmation and answered questions as well as selected sires based off of provided data, and judged animal pedigrees.
Buckeye Valley High School FFA students were at the CDE and competed in the high school division. Individually, Sarah Lehner was ninth, Hannah Edelblute was 12th, Macee Burke was 62nd, Donnie Smith was 75th and Elissa Huffman was 77th.
“There were almost 200 students between the two divisions,” Stimmell said. “The Buckeye Valley team will compete in the state finals April 30 at OSU, the same day our Big Walnut/DACC FFA equine team, that placed sixth in the state finals the previous weekend, will be competing in the state finals.”
Stimmell said the Big Walnut equine team consists of Autumn Takatch (10), Jacob Howard (35), Evan Thiergartner (100) and Becca Fitch (338).
“The equine team judges classes of horses and identifies tack and equipment in the equine industry,” Stimmell said.
