Genoa Township Trustee Leo Wilhelm stopped at the Delaware County Board of Elections on July 30 to file his petition to run for a full four-year term as trustee.
Earlier this year, Wilhelm replaced former Genoa trustee Barb Lewis, who resigned effective Dec. 31 to assume her duties as a Delaware County commissioner.
Wilhelm is serving out the remaining one year of Lewis’ term as a trustee; that term expires Dec. 31 of this year.
Wilhelm came to the dais with a host of experience specific to township issues. He served 10 years as a member of the Genoa Township Zoning Commission, chairing the commission five of those years. He has also been a member of the Genoa Township Board of Zoning Appeals.
“I appreciate (Genoa Trustees) Karl (Gebhardt) and Rick (Carfagna) for giving me this opportunity to sit on the board,” Wilhelm said. “Barb Lewis is a tough act to follow, but it’s rewarding, I’ve enjoyed it.”
Wilhelm, who has a day job as a financial manager with the State Teachers Retirement System, said being a township trustee is far more demanding than serving on the township zoning board.
“I’ve been amazed at the amount of hours being a trustee actually takes – lots of evenings and weekends,” Wilhelm said. “Zoning’s focus is one specific application at a time before the board; that’s pretty much under your control. As a trustee, the demands are more continuous, different things surface all the time, questions to answer, fires to put out.”
Wilhelm is not running unopposed. On July 31, Frank Dantonio filed his petition to run for Genoa Township trustee.
The 2015 General Election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
