Golden Eagle Mentor Awards nominations sought:Those who go above and beyond

By Lenny C. Lepola -

Each year members of the Big Walnut Local School District honor their own at a ceremony and dinner hosted by Roush Honda immediately preceding the May Big Walnut Board of Education meeting. Recognized during the ceremony are that school year’s recipients of the Roush Honda Golden Eagle Mentor Award.

Roush Honda Golden Eagle Mentor Award recipients are selected through a nomination process that began earlier this month when school administrators, staff members, and area residents nominate individuals they believe have made a positive impact in the life of Big Walnut students.

Nomination criteria include involvement, support, and communication for a school building, the school district, and within the Big Walnut community; impacting the lives of students in a positive manner; and promoting the welfare of students while they are at home, in school, or in the community.

A panel of volunteers and staff then selects final honorees.

Nominees will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the strength of demonstration in the following criteria: Works for the district’s mission or assists the individual school or district to inspire and guide students to reach their maximum potential.

Staff nominees should be student-focused – caring, available, supportive, positive, and friendly; professional – lifelong learners who are dedicated and accountable; and collaborative – flexible, team-oriented, and cooperative. In addition, staff nominees must reach far beyond any acts that could be considered part of the individual’s job description.

Community, parent, and volunteer nominees should be informed, supportive, and involved. They should demonstrate extraordinary service that goes far above what is typical, and consistently demonstrate a level of selfless doing whatever is needed service.

Individuals may not be nominated if they have been a Golden Eagle Mentor Award recipient in the past five years.

This year’s deadline for Golden Eagle Mentor Award nominations is Monday, April 17.

To accommodate the Golden Eagle Mentor Awards ceremony, the Thursday, May 18, meeting of the Big Walnut Local School District Board of Education will be held at Big Walnut High School. The 5 p.m. award ceremony will be held in the high school auditorium, followed by a dinner in the cafeteria. The board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the high school’s Innovation Center.
