During last Thursday evening’s Big Walnut Local School District Board of Education meeting, board members approved a motion to establish a Facilities Planning Board Committee.
When asked what was the difference between a superintendent’s committee and a board committee, district superintendent Angie Pollock said board committees fall under the same Sunshine Laws as the board of education, with advertised public meetings and meeting minutes kept as public documents.
“We’re making it a board committee because we know we’re not going to stop growing anytime soon,” Pollock said. “We’ve been looking at our enrollment numbers, and in 10 years we’ll have 2,000 more students.”
Pollock said the district’s current facilities would not accommodate the number of additional students the district expects over the next decade; and it takes three to four years to design and build a school building.
“We’re on a fast track trying to keep up with growth,” Pollock said. “We’re hoping we can work through this committee and present something to the board next spring, go on the ballot next November.”
Board members Brad Schneider and Allison Fagan will be board of education representatives on the board facilities committee, Pollock said; and several building administrators have also volunteered to serve on the committee.
Pollock said the district has also been working collaboratively with political subdivisions in the district to address the demands of residential and commercial growth.
