Every summer, members of the Sunbury’s Col. Benson W. Hough American Legion Post 457 sponsor students between their junior and senior years who attend the weeklong Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State.
The 2016 Buckeye Boys State will be held at Bowling Green State University from Sunday, June 12, to Sunday afternoon, June 19; Buckeye Girls State will be held at Mount Union from Sunday, June 12, to Saturday afternoon, June 18.
Applications and additional information about both programs can be downloaded from the Post 457 website at americanlegionsunbury.com, and are also available at the Big Walnut High School guidance office.
Return applications to the Big Walnut High School guidance office or to American Legion Post 457, P.O. Box 173, Sunbury, OH 43074 by Feb. 11.
Post 457 Buckeye Boys State/Girls State coordinator Kim Walker said there is no cost to the students to attend either program, and Post 457 would like to send three boys to Boys State and three girls to Girls State during 2016.
Walker said Big Walnut area homeschooled students are also welcome to apply.
Founded in 1936, Buckeye Boys State is the largest Boys State program in the nation with an attendance of 1,400 young men annually. Boys State programs throughout the nation are sponsored by the American Legion, the nation’s largest veterans organization.
Buckeye Girls State is the name given to Ohio’s Girls State program. The Ohio American Legion Auxiliary has sponsored Buckeye Girls State for more than 60 years.
Both Boys State and Girls State affords participants an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens by informing them about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship and hopefully encourages their participation in the democratic process as they progress into adulthood.
Additional program activities include journalism, law enforcement, music, field trips, group devotions and patriotic ceremonies.
