Former Sunbury Village Administrator Dave Martin retired in December. Sunbury Village Council members and mayor Tommy Hatfield advertised for Martin’s replacement as the New Year began. They were looking for a candidate who could grow with the Village as residential and commercial development escalates, both inside and outside the Village.
On June 17, Council members held an abbreviated meeting before entering executive session for a final round of interviews with the two short-listed candidates for the Village Administrator position — Don Buczek and Allen Rothermel.
During last Wednesday’s council session, Council members approved hiring Rothermel as Sunbury Village Administrator with a starting salary of $65,000 a year.
At the beginning of the year Mayor Hatfield had said he hoped to have the field narrowed by late March or early April, but arranging schedules that allowed candidates to be interviewed by Council members in executive session proved elusive.
“Where the Village is at and the challenges ahead of us, we believe Allen is the man for the job,” said Sunbury Mayor Tommy Hatfield following Council approval of Ordinance 2015-20 that authorizes the mayor to execute Rothermel’s contract.
Rothermel, who has resided in Delaware County for the past 11 years, comes from the City of Delaware, where he served as Assistant City Manager.
“This just feels right,” Rothermel said as he addressed Council members following the vote. “The challenges the Village faces fits my skill set. When I come on board I’ll start looking at short, medium and long-term action plans.”
Rothermel has a Bachelors Degree in Public Administration and Finance earned at Miami University, and a Master of Public Administration from New York University.
Earlier in his career Rothermel served 17 years as Assistant City Manager, Interim Manager and City Manager of Fairborn, Ohio.
He started work as Sunbury’s Village Administrator on Tuesday Morning.
