Meet Recap: Wrestling Big Walnut Wrestlers competed in the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association’s Holiday Tournament on Thursday and Friday at Vandalia Butler High School. The 49-team tournament is a premier competition and includes state qualifiers from all divisions in Ohio and Kentucky. Coach Renner decided to only take six wrestlers from his young team, Senior Josh Halbakken (170), Juniors Christian Jodrey (120), Ryan Colletta (152), and Max Lenz (220) and Freshman Andrew Parker (106) and Lawrence O’Malley (145). Halbakken began the tournament as the 5th seed, he dispatched Charles Smith of Urbana, Hunter Elam of Tecumseh and 4th seed Duncan Cooper of Covington by falls to put himself in the Semifinals. He faced 1st seed and eventual champion Drew Weichers of Centerville and lost 11-3. He beat to Dylan Hines of Tri-Valley 13-1 to earn a spot in the 3rd place bout facing 3rd seed Jared Kelsay of Covington (KY) Scott where he lost a tough match in sudden victory 9-7 to place 4th.

Unseeded Colletta also started off strong. A 9-3 decision over Troy’s Carlos Quintero put him in a match against Troy Christian’s Austin Awan, the 6th seed. He fought a tough battle and won 7-6 with an escape in the last 10 seconds. His next bout was won by fall over Jonathon Freeman of Walton-Verona (KY). In the Semifinal match, he faced 3rd seed Andrew Knick of Northmont who won by fall. Unfortunately, Colletta was eliminated by a 9-4 loss to Chris Weadick of Eaton.

Lenz, the 8th seed, also placed himself in the quarterfinals with 2 opening wins. He won by fall over Camron Griffith of Pickerington Central and Anthony Barhorst of Bellbrook. He then faced eventual champion Anthony Pattison of Bellefontaine. He fought a tough match and took the champion to the wire where he lost a close 6-4 decision. This put him in a tough consolation match against the 5th seeded Joe Wahl of West Clermont. He again fought a tough match and closed the gap late to lose a 7-5 decision to the eventual 3rd place finisher

Both Andrew Parker and Christian Jodrey were eliminated from competition with a loss in the opening round and in their wrestle-backs.

Big Walnut placed 18th of 49 teams with only 5 wrestlers competing.
